Discovering the Santiago mine and driving to Argentine pass and summiting Mt. Edwards was a highlight for all. The stars were absolutely breathtaking at night with the milky way touching both horizons. What a great weekend!” ~Hannah A.

Prepping for Your Trip

Packing for a hut trip may seem daunting but no fear! We are here to help you remember what to bring.

Summer/Fall Trip Packing

During the snow-free months, you can drive to the hut making it easier to bring all the essentials for a great trip. Listed here are hut specific items you will want on your Tundra Hut adventure

  • Water – bring drinking/cooking water with you or a water filter. There are rain barrels at the hut and a year-long spring about 1/4 mile away
  •  Sleeping Gear – bring sleeping bags or your own set of sheets and blankets. Pillows are provided at the hut
  • Cooler – bring a cooler to keep all your perishable food cold, there is no refrigerator at the hut
  • Warm Clothes – mountain weather is unpredictable, storms and cold nights mean you should bring a jacket and long pants even during the height of summer
  • Sun Protection – at such a high elevation, the sun is very strong, even on cloudy days. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
  • Headlamp – not a need-to-have (there are lights in the hut) but a great extra at night for stargazing or walking around the hut while others sleep
  • Ear Plugs – Are you light sleeper? With a group of folks in the hut, ear plugs can help you get a full nights sleep

Winter Trip Packing

Packing for a winter trip can seem like a lot, but this list highlights the essentials when visiting the Tundra Hut.

  • Sleeping Bag  – bring a 20 degree or similar sleeping bag, even in a hut it can get chilly at night so a summer weight sleeping bag probably won’t be enough. Pillows are provided at the hut.
  •  Clothing – bring warm clothes for when you are outside and a set of comfy clothes for hanging in the hut.
  • Hut Shoes – having a pair of slippers/crocs/sandals for inside the hut is great to keep your feet warm
  • Sun Protection – at such a high elevation, the sun is very strong, even in the winter. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
  • Emergency Gear – bring a small first air kit, emergency shelter, lighter, and a emergency communication device. The hut is up an isolated valley with little to no cell phone service, be prepared.
  • Repair Kit – bring items to repair your equipment if necessary
  •  Headlamp – bring a headlamp as safety equipment and luxury while walking around the hut while others sleep at night
  • Ear Plugs – Are you light sleeper? With a group of folks in the hut, ear plugs can help you get a full nights sleep
